The 2024–25 academic year was a remarkable one for music at the School, with pupils demonstrating outstanding talent, creativity and commitment across a busy programme of concerts and competitions.

Highlights of the year included a packed Jazz Night, the much-loved Christmas Carol Service, and the Spring and Summer Concerts, all of which drew large audiences and showcased the breadth of musical life at the School. From orchestral and jazz ensembles to choirs, string groups and soloists, pupils impressed with their energy, professionalism and passion for performance.

Music also played a central role in House life. In January, over 250 pupils took part in the House Music competition, a vibrant and highly competitive event that saw Newgate crowned overall winners. The competition was a clear demonstration of how music brings the School community together, encouraging participation and friendly rivalry alongside musical excellence.

Individual achievement was also celebrated. Edward in Year 10 was selected to attend the prestigious National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain Summer School, where he was appointed Principal Percussionist — a tremendous recognition of his skill and dedication.

As always, music at the School is about more than performance. It provides pupils with invaluable experiences: the discipline of rehearsals, the confidence of stepping into the spotlight, and the joy of working together to create something unforgettable.

Much of this is made possible thanks to the generosity of those who support the School Development Fund, which helps provide instruments, sheet music, and the resources needed to stage high-quality concerts.
